UMBRA
Movement Labs
Constraint-led movement in Roseville, CA.
The Lab
UMBRA is not a gym. There are no machines, no mirrors, no classes where an instructor counts reps while you stare at the clock.
It is a movement laboratory. A single dark room. One light. People on the mats solving problems with their bodies.
The method is called the constraint-led approach, or CLA. It comes from ecological dynamics, a branch of movement science that studies how humans learn through interaction with their environment. Instead of telling you how to move, we change the conditions around you. Time limits. Space limits. Contact rules. What is and is not allowed. Your body figures out the rest.
You do not copy techniques. You develop capacity. The difference is durable. A copied move breaks under pressure. A solved problem stays solved.
Sessions are small. Every other Saturday. Partner-based. No sparring unless you want it. The room is dark so you feel movement instead of watching it. No one asks you to memorize anything. You show up and you move.
The Founder
Jacobb Garcia learned movement the hard way. No formal coaching pathway. No academy pipeline. He taught himself through ecological dynamics and constraint-led learning, studying the science and testing it on himself.
He trained under Nick Diaz, absorbing a style built on pressure and pace. His foundation is Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but his thinking extends beyond any single discipline.
UMBRA is the space he wished existed when he started. A place where beginners are not thrown into the deep end. Where thinking is not a weakness. Where the method is transparent and the room is quiet.
The Space
The room is dark. A single overhead light cuts through the void and lands on the mat. No mirrors. No glass walls. No branding on every surface.
Without mirrors, you cannot watch yourself. You have to feel the movement. Your attention shifts from how you look to what your body is actually doing. Haptic awareness replaces visual checking. The walls are close enough to feel contained, far enough to move freely. Concrete floors. Clean mats. Nothing extra.
